I only have a few things that I want to post an update on in week 5 of my latest injury mishap. The healing is progressing very nicely. Most of the clicking has stopped at the break point which is encouraging since it would seem to indicate further healing.
I have also flip flopped how much I use my home-made brace and the splint given to me by the orthopedic specialist office. Where I used to use my home made brace more often, I now wear the splint more. I do not use the brace as often because the bone forming and hardening is creating a lump in my hand and sometimes the pressure gets painful. Now I”m really glad I have the splint and take back my earlier posts about it’s effectiveness. I still wouldn’t give up my brace because it provided immeasurable help at the beginning but the splint is definitely seeing more use now.
Although I was given the splint by the Orthopedic office, I found the exact same one on Amazon Medical Specialties Boxer Splint. If you cannot get to a doctors office for some reason or do not have insurance to get properly checked out, it comes in “handy”.
I can grip with surprising strength around objects I can enclose my fingers around like a grab bar but trying to grip with my fingertips is awkward and uncomfortable, sometimes slightly painful. I try not to worry about the future of the hand by arguing against getting surgery but it does pop up in my head now and then. I’m getting really restless not being able to do upper body work in the gym and missing mat time for Jiu Jitsu but again, patience is key when recovering and even though I know this I have to remind myself to be a little more patient!
I have another appointment scheduled with the Orthopedist in my 6th week which I would normally not go to since it looks like my hand is healing and it costs $50.00 every time I have to visit! I want to show the whole x-ray progression though so I will suck it up for the visuals!
