This is my final update for the fractured 4th metacarpal. It has been 6-1/2 weeks since the break occurred and I’m still not a 100% sure if I made the right choice in not having surgery. I can say that I do not have any pain and that I’ve begun to train with weights again. Pushing doesn’t seem to be a problem as I put up 225lbs without too much issue but I can feel weakness when I am doing pulling motions like clean and jerks (which I only do with minimal weights at the moment).
It will take time to find out the long term effects of not having surgery on the fractured metacarpal, I have a pronounced bump at the break point and no knuckle in the right ring finger.
During my last visit with the hand specialist he said the bone was healing well and that I should have no abnormal issues with the hand. The x-rays at the 6-1/2 week mark are at once both encouraging and a tiny bit discouraging. It’s encouraging because there is definitely more bone forming around the break but it’s a bit discouraging at the same time since the fracture is highly visible still.
All I know is that my hand feels good enough to do most activities without the use of either my home-made brace or the splint. I’m going to give it another 2 weeks before I go back to grappling in order to give the bone to grow strong around the break and since my neck is still bothering me from falling off a cliff over 4 months ago!
