I was grappling and felt a weird popping feeling around my knuckles in my left hand while I was rolling with the blackbelt owner of the new BJJ school I was looking at joining.
It didn’t really hurt so I kept going for the last minute or two of the round and waited till I was able to look at it more closely. Something definitely did not feel right. The best I could describe it is that my tendon going through my middle finger was slipping back and forth over the knuckle!
It looked closest to this video I found on Youtube (not my video)
There was a physical therapist that was training that day so he was looking at it and told me to push up with my fingers while he was pushing it down…there was immediate searing pain. I thought he made it worse!
So based on that video I could have a tendon sheath rupture
Everything in my initial reading is recommending surgery so I’m not sure if I should go to a hand specialist quite yet. I’ve cobbled together a splint to keep my finger/knuckle straight for now and waiting to see what happens.
I know that’s not what most people would recommend but based on my experience with injuries this one isn’t causing too much pain so I’m hoping it will heal itself without surgery like my other hand injury.
