Have you ever experienced pain or discomfort in your hip area? A nagging discomfort that won’t go away no matter how much you stretch or foam roll? I experienced this for a few weeks straight and even though it wasn’t a sharp pain that affected my life enormously, it was really uncomfortable. I was still able to jog on the treadmill and do a normal weighted workout but I could not get rid of the nagging pain!
If you’ve ever had this issue maybe my story will help.
Before I talk about my hips I have to talk about an accident. A minor fender bender one block away from work that caused my 1 week old Subaru Legacy to be in the shop for a few weeks.
Since I was going to be without a car for a few weeks and I stupidly took off the rental coverage from my insurance literally two days before the accident, I decided to save some money and take public transportation to and from work. That meant that I had to walk nearly two miles each day…which was actually kind of pleasant! It was summer so while the evening may have gotten a tad sticky, the morning walk was pretty refreshing. The only drawback was that I couldn’t go to the gym in the morning like I normally do.
I was also buying my lunch almost everyday at this point in time (I bring lunch most days now! Saves me a lot of money). I usually ordering something on seamless (love seamless!) and eat at my desk while working but for some reason I decided to walk to an amazing deli a few blocks away at the very beginning of this incident and it felt amazing, I got a chance to get away from the computer and the walk really reset me mentally and physically…so I did it again and again. Walking to grab lunch was probably another mile that I was walking daily, bringing the total miles from walking to 3 miles a day!
Why do you care about my rambling about walking after my accident? Because after about a week and a half of walking, my hip discomfort disappeared! It made me realize just how much I was sitting down all day.
- I sit down in the car
- I sit at work all day
- I sit when I eat
- I sit when I’m at my computer at home
- I sit on the couch when I’m watching TV
I’m a professional sitter! No wonder my hips are often tight and in discomfort! This whole experience made me realize that the body is meant to move, setting aside one hour a day for exercise is great but we all need to be more mindful of our body and make sure we give ourselves the opportunity to get up and stretch and move around during our day.
I’ve even created a pop up message that jumps out at me every 2 hours to remind me.
